<b><span style="font-size: small;">Très obscure groupe de freakbeat (notre nourriture spirituelle) dont le plus grand titre de gloire (posthume) est d'avoir fourni son guitariste à Little Free Rock. Inutile de vous précipiter, la finesse, parfois Blakmorienne, du jeu de Pete Illingworth est ici totalement absente. Juste pour décourager les petits malins. DJATM a laissé trois (rares) singles à la postérité, et l'excellente compilation (une de nos bases de travail) Maximum R'n' B permet de juger sur deux titres. Bien qu'ils soient loin de figurer dans les meilleurs élèves. Une drôle de version du <i>Pretty Things</i> de Bo Diddley, d'abord. Mauvais point, la reprise d'un archi classique, au lieu de se sortir les doigts et de composer. Bon, c'est simple, à part la brillante partie d'harmonica, on a l'impression que le groupe est bourré. Et que ça part en zigzag, et que le chanteur à la diction d'un arsouille. Hautement dispensable. Basique, les gars, pas lourdingue. Seconde chance, <i>To Catch That Man</i>. D'entrée, David John Smith ne nous avait pas volé sur la marchandise, il chante vraiment comme une casserole. Avec une diction forcée, tout à fait horripilante. On en vient à se demander si il connait le sens du mot «mojo», tellement sa prononciation sonne faux. Mais l'effort d'écriture est patent. Jolie intro en étages, beat agréablement appuyé et bien en place. Solo de guitare hérissé, simple, mais déjà tranchant. Le tout est concis, craché en deux minutes et quelques secondes. Quand même loin de mériter le prix demandé pour les originaux. Popsike annonçant plus de deux cent euros. En temps de crise, ça fait réfléchir.</span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-size: small;">La légende du rock s’est emparé avec acidité de ce combo au combien controversé. Autant descendu pour ses incompétences techniques et harmoniques dans les sixties, qu’adulé dans les seventies par les punks qui y voient l’incarnation vivante de l’essence rock même : une guitare, un ampli et paf on gratte avec toute la rage qui nous anime. Rien de plus. Tel était la musique des John’s Children.<br /><br />Le groupe naît à Leatherhead sous le patronyme Silence, avant de se faire chaperonner par Simon Napier-Bell qui les rebaptisera les John’s Children. Avec leurs gueules ravagés, ils commencent à écumer les pubs et salles de concert du coin, distillant leurs cacophonies sonores sur fond de prestations live déjantés. Malgré cela, leur manager parvient à les faire signer sur le label Columbia. Il faut dire que ce dernier a un certain talent à bricoler des morceaux, c’est ainsi qu’il co-écrit la première face B du groupe, <i>Smashed Blocked</i> qui sort en 66. Un clavier branquignole en fond sonore, un chant possédé, des accords claqués à l’emporte pièce, et une des toutes premières pièces psychédéliques du rock anglais!!! On ne peut qu’être littéralement emporté par ce morceau totalement bizarre, qui ne répond à aucune structure, carrément free à la rigueur! Clair qu’à l’époque, les groupies ne comprennent pas trop, le groupe est souvent conspué, et répond par des prestations d’une arrogance sans vergogne. </span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-size: small;">Un second simple sort l’année suivante, <i>Just What You Want, Just What You'll Get/But She's Mine</i>, qui claque une nouvelle fois ce son déglinguée, guitariste à la ramasse et ce brouillon sonore, pourtant tellement attirant! Et il réside dans la composition des morceaux une certaine innocence et fraîcheur. Évidemment, l’attitude des gars et leur musique ne font pas les beaux jours de leur label qui les lâche aussitôt. Le chanteur mis à la porte, le combo recrute un certain Marc Bolan pour le 45t suivant, le délirant <i>Desdemonia</i>, où sur une rythmique plus que basique, basse plombante, riff désaccordé, le groupe grave SON classique! Banni par la majorité des radios à cause de ses textes immorales (<i>lift up your skirt and fly</i>), le groupe part jouer en Allemagne en compagnie des Who dans la foulée, tournée au combien épique, que ne supportera pas Bolan qui quitte le groupe au retour. Malgré 3 autres 45tours, pour le moins tout aussi barge (voire la structure mystique et fluctuante de <i>Midsummer Night's Scene</i>), les John’s Children splittent à la fin de l’année. Un album verra jour la même année aux US, enregistré live et terriblement irritant, non pas par la guitare désaccordée mais par les cris hystériques des groupies. Reste une paire de single totalement recommandable!!!</span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-size: small;">Groupe folk trad à la discographie prolifique, et intéressant à plus d’un titre. D’un, le coté trad, assumé, se mêle à une contemporanéitée (Mot inventé pour l'occaz') rafraîchissante. Deux, les harmonies vocales, accouplées à une simplicité des harmonies, les rendent particulièrement attachant. Après 8 albums (dont 7 sur l’excellente firme Transatlantic), sur la courte période 68/72, le nombre de chansons déterrées ou composées constituent l’un des plus beaux répertoires du folk anglais. On ne peut que se surprendre à siffloter, rêvasser ou encore mélancoliquement refaire le monde autour d’un brunch. Une paisibilitée (seconde invention orthographique) qui se dégage avec un charme intemporel, comme quoi avec peu, le monde peut sembler heureux.<br />Bien sur, on est loin des digressions que l’on préconise ici, point d’acid folk, ou d’envolé lyrique, d’embranchement avec le rock. Mais très loin de la niaiserie d’une Joan Baez, ou de l’inodore Melanie (même si il faut bien sur mesurer ces propos, ces deux dames ayant gravé de véritables petites perles). Non, on est davantage proche de cette vieille idéologie hyppisante d’un retour à la sagesse et à la beauté de ce qui nous entoure. Et rien que pour cela, allez y jeter une oreille!</span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-size: small;">Le truc à faire fantasmer la horde de fans du Floyd. Premier groupe de Gilmour avant qu’il ne prenne la place de Syd, les Joker’s Wild était typiquement le genre de groupe a gonzesses, reprenant des classiques pop à la Beach Boys, légèrement surf et qui ne laissait en aucun cas entrevoir les qualités intrinsèques de Gilmour. Beaucoup de musicos ont transité via ce groupe, mais le noyau dur était composé de David, de Rick Wills (qu’on retrouvera au sein des Bad Company et des infâmes Foreigner), et Dick Perry qui participera à de nombreuses sessions d’enregistrement du Floyd. <br /><br />Bien que ce groupe de collège soit courant à l’époque, les gars enregistrent un mini LP en 66, avec 5 morceaux sur la faceA, la seconde étant vierge. Cinquante exemplaire en sont tirés, ce qui en fait un ultra collector pour le complétiste, ainsi qu’un simple démo, qui fut tout aussi confidentiel. Musicalement, c’est bien pauvre, hormis le dernier morceau <i>Beautiful Delilah</i>, qui a son petit coté R&B non déplaisant.<br />Les archives sonores nationales de la British Library ont conservé une copie du 33 tours, l’inscrivant dans le panthéon de l’histoire de la musique anglaise… Pour combien de démo totalement oublié et sans doute beaucoup plus intéressant…</span></b></div>

Deux 45t au compteur, la même année, 1967, et franchement très agréable à l’écoute, surtout le second avec l’envoûtante pièce qu’est <i>Is It Love</i>. Globalement, le combo savait torcher des compositions toutes en douceurs, respectant le format pop à la perfection, distillant des arrangements distingués et distinguant. La seule chose que je sauverais de David Bowie sont sûrement ses débuts, quand il ne se prenait pas pour le prince de la pop. Bien sur, il a sorti de bonnes choses, comme ce Pin Ups dans un exercice plutôt réussi, mais le gars ne m’a jamais transcendé. Reste une voix de l’au delà, et cela on ne peut le nier. Il débute avec les King Bees dans les quartiers sud de Londres, où ils reçoivent un accueil assez chaleureux. De cette expérience sera concrétisé la sortie d’un premier 45t, le très R&B Liza Jane/Louie, Louie Go Home. Évidemment très gros collecter, puisqu’il s’échange autour des 1000 livres, rien de moins. En 1965, on le retrouve avec un nouveau backing band, les Lower Third, avec qui il grave le couple You've Got A Habit Of Leaving/Baby Loves That Way. Très chouette tendance mod sur ces deux morceaux, et bien évidemment, très appréciés des collectionneurs. C’est tout de même à la suite de ce simple que David Bowie prend toute la mesure de son talent, et décide de se lancer sous son propre nom, David Jones. L’histoire est en marche!</span></span></b></div>

Après avoir bu à tous les râteliers, inondé le marché du pop de productions sirupeuses et indigeste, joué ici et là dans des séries à l’eau de rose, vlà ti pas que Davy Jones sort en 67 un album solo tout aussi magnifiquement imbuvable. Doté d’une gueule tête à claques, le bonhomme nous sort une dizaine de compositions arriérées de 10 ans… Me suis toujours demandé si la CIA n’était pas dans le coup!!!! <b><span style="font-size: small;">Immortalisé par les Clash de Mick Jones, la belle et ténébreuse Janie Jones a tout de l’icône pop sixties. Sexy, trash, engagé, l’anti féministe par nature a gravé quelques singles dans les sixties, accrochant un mini tube dès 1965 avec <i>Witches Brew</i>, cabaret pop un peu déjanté. Tout au long de ses années folles, la belle frôlera avec le monde du rock (Marc Bolan, Tom Jones) comme avec le monde politique, s’engageant très tôt chez ses tyrans de socialistes britons. Adepte des coups d’éclats, comme lorsqu’elle se présentera un soir de 64 dénudé sous une robe légère à la première d’un film. Un tempérament de feu qui lui ouvrira incontestablement la possibilité d’enregistrer quelques singles plutôt intéressant, comme ce superbe Psycho, morceau totalement barré sur une rythmique beat et hypnotique qui n’aurait pas déplu aux plus grands timbrés du monde pop.</span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-size: small;">Reste une discographie assez disparates, allant de la popette gentillette et parfois grotesque, au freak beat le mieux senti. La belle pouvait également compté sur son mari, un certain John Christian Dee qui travaillera en outre pour les Bulldog Breed, et créateur du célèbre <i>Don’t Bring Me Down</i> des Pretty Things. Son influence sur sa musique est sans aucun doute évidente, tant le virage amorcé entre 65 et son style cabaret pop se transforma en de puissants rock ravageur, comme le prouve ce titre exhumé il y a peu, et jamais enregistré à l’époque, <i>Witch In White</i>, qui lui colle à merveille à la peau. Guitare saturé, riffs lourds, chant possédé, ce titre est une bombe!<br />Début 70, les choses se gâtent, Janie Jones fréquentant les trottoirs de Londres, célèbre Madame londonienne et sera accusé de prosélytisme, ce qui lui vaudra une condamnation lourde, résidant 7 ans en taule, où elle défendra en outre les droits carcéraux. Est sorti également une compilation plus que recommandable sous le titre We’re In Love With The World Of Janie Jones. </span></b></div>

Il effectue ses premiers pas au sein de la machine o combien importante du Alexis Korner’ Blues Incorporated, et impressionne déjà par son timbre de voix. Plusieurs combos lui font donc la cour et c’est au sein des Night Timers qui débute sa discographie avec le 45t <i>I Need Your Loving/Let's Pin A Rose On You</i>. Un premier essai satisfaisant qui lance sa carrière avec fulgurance. </span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-size: small;">L’année suivante, c’est le groupe de Tony Allen, les Blue Jays, qui à la recherche d’un chanteur, jette leur dévolus sur ce grand black américain. Ronnie y côtoie un certain Roger Dean (futur Bluesbreakers) ainsi que Pat Donald son (futur Fotheringay), ce qui lui permettra d’étoffer son cercle d’admirateur. Malgré un bon 45t, Ronnie voit plus grand et veux son propre backing band. PP Arnold le remplacera par la suite. C’est ainsi que Ronnie use, et abuse, de nombreux musiciens pour les cinq SP qu’il sortira sur son nom. On en sortira le magnifique et suave <i>My Love</i> (hum cet orgue qui swingue!!!), ou encore cette petite perle de soul bercé de fuzz qu’est <i>In My Love Mind</i> (1967), ou ce dithyrambique <i>Little Betty Pretty One</i> qui vous bouge le cul comme pas permis!</span></b></div>

Ok, ok… On nous promet un foisonnement de mellotron, d’arrangements à profusion, et effectivement nous voilà face à un bordel sonore qui tire à vue dans tous les sens dans un magma de sonorités plus criardes les unes que les autres. <b><span style="font-size: small;">L’un des fleurons du label heavy progressif Vertigo, et pour autant, la musique déployé par le gang de Glenn Campbell, qui fit ses gammes au seins des Misunderstood, n’a point de vocation progressive. Elle puise davantage ses ressources dans le blues et ses 12 accords magiques, swinguant à la perfection là où tant d’autres combos anglais se sont englués dans une musique complexe, oubliant la simplicité originale du rock.<br /><br />Tout part de la rencontre au sein des Misunderstood de Campbell et du chanteur Ray Owen, complété par le saxophoniste Chris Mercer, qui décide en avril 69 de former un nouveau groupe. Ils s’adjoignent alors les services du guitariste Neil Hubbard, du bassiste Keith Ellis et du batteur Pete Dobson. Le groupe trouve vite ses marques, enregistre quelques démos et puis au final sont signés rapidement par le tout jeune label Vertigo. Très rapidement, le combo enregistre suffisamment de matériel pour sortir un album, qui sera la seconde sortie officielle du label à spirale.<br /><br />Sous une pochette du plus mauvais goût (Zelda Plum, danseuse burlesque complètement nu sous un amoncellement de fruits), l’album éponyme dégaine 8 titres complètement jouissif, où le blues s’amourache du rock le long de chouettes parties de guitare quasi heavy. Certes, on est en 69, et la bande à Campbell n’a rien inventé, mais le groupe joue à la perfection les 12 mesures, et à l’image de Canned Heat, l’un des rares à apprivoiser le swing original. Surtout, ils torchent une version totalement démente du Who Do You Love de Bo Diddley, qui leurs ouvrent les portes d’une reconnaissance immédiate, sacralisé par un premier 45 tours qui se classent 20e dans les charts.<br /><br />Fort de ce succès, Juicy Lucy tourne pas mal en Angleterre, et fais tourner la tête du chanteur Ray Owen qui décide de tenter l’aventure en solo. Hubbard et Dobson quitte également le groupe la même année, et c’est donc au sein d’un nouvel line up que le groupe rentre a nouveau en studio fin 70. Ils sont rejoints par le chanteur Paul Williams (ex Zoot Money, une voix rocailleuse qui colle parfaitement au blues rock du combo), du guitariste Micky Moody et du batteur Rod Coombes. Trois nouvelles recrues qui vont donner davantage d’originalité et de richesse au superbe Lie Back And Enjoy It.<br /><br />Encore une fois, la pochette ne laisse pas indifférente, superbe volet tripartite. Musicalement, le groupe creuse les sillons du blues originel, mais l’enrichie d’une plus grande diversité dans la composition, dans laquelle Chris Mercer tiens une place prépondérante. Le groupe sera alors cantonné au mouvement progressif pour les années à venir. Bien moins réducteur, Lie Back And Enjoy It est un pure produit de la pop music, piochant dans l’excentricité psychédélique, triturant un heavy blues qui n’oublie à aucun moment le swing. Mieux, les gars dégainent une version terrible de Willie The Pimp de Zappa, absolument incroyable et généreuse, boogie furieux et orgasmique.<br /><br />Sur sa lancée, le groupe joue plusieurs festivals, dont le concert annuel du NME. Mais le relatif succès de ce second album lasse l’ambiance du combo, et c’est difficilement que le groupe s’attelle à son troisième opus qui ne retrouvera pas la grâce de ses deux premiers essais. Un quatrième LP verra le jour en 1972, sur Polydor, dans lequel aucun des membres originels ne participent.</span></b></div>

? Alors, un certain Julian Jay Savarin, né en républicaine
Dominicaine, et qui nous a pondu (1970) le dramatique (à tous les
sens du terme) <i>A Time Before This</i><span style="font-style: normal;">.
Rarissime dans sa forme originale, peu connu hors du cercle des
branchés, et tant mieux. Parce que voyez vous, la musique
progressive c'est comme la blanquette de veau, tout un art à bien
rendre. Patto en reste un merveilleux exemple. Chansons complexes,
mais une grosse dose de soul couillue derrière. Bien beau de
tartiner des jolies couleurs, en exhibant sa licence artistique. Mais
quand on rien à dire, reste uniquement la prétention. Donc Patto
est un putain de groupe trop méconnu....Ah oui, on parle d'autre

Treatment, c'est encore la voix de l'australienne Cathy Pruden. Les
compositions sont tartes, pèsent vingt tonnes, possèdent le charme
de deux mammouths en pleine roucoulade. Mais à la limite, on est
habitué. Le format est connu, après la pluie viendra la gastro.
Quoique la vocaliste en question, c'est un cas d'école. Elle aborde
tout en pimbêche déclamatoire, sorte de Lara Fabian dopée au
diesel. Ça existe. Qu'on soit dans un registre haut ou bas, Ian
Gillan peut aller se rhabiller et Jon Anderson en ressemble à Howlin
Wolf. Le charme de la sirène de pompiers à trois heures du matin.
Aussi mélodieuse, mais sans la lumière bleue. Parlez moi d'une
ambulance. L’honnêteté m'oblige à dire qu'il y a quelques bons
moments, dans toute cette confiture. Mais quel chemin faut-il
emprunter pour en arriver la. Et par quoi il faut encore en passer
pour s'extirper du reste. Pour rigoler un peu, je conseille les
titres des morceaux. Ça parle de prophétie ou d'oracle. En toute
simplicité. Et la chanteuse ? Pleine bourre, elle se prend pour la
fille du soleil. C'est vrai qu'on a eu un été pourri. Le pire
c'est que le dit Savarin se fendra (en 1973) de la merveille </span><i>Waiters
On The Dance</i><span style="font-style: normal;">. Lumineuse pépite
de fraîcheur, oasis dans le désert orchestré par Greenslade, et
autres commerçants en d'hémorroïdes sonores. Non je déconne pas.

Pruden enfin retourné élever des kangourous. Et remplacée par une

Savarin ? Il a continué à écrire. On est bien content pour lui. </span></span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-size: small;">L’un des fleurons du rock psychédélique anglais. Qu’on range finalement pas loin de Kaleidoscope, dans son bunker musical bariolé d’affiches distordues, de statuettes bouddhiste et autres tapisseries orientales, vapeur mouvante d’herbe et d’encens, échappant à la morosité ambiante, et s’engouffrant dans une nostalgie béate mais tellement essentielle. July, c’est un unique album, sorti sur le label Major Minor, autant dire distribué au compte goutte, distribué également sur Epic aux States et au Canada, mais tout aussi difficilement chinable.<br />Bref, un combo qui commence comme tant d’autres, surfant sur la vague du moment, le siffle puis le R&B au sein successivement des Playboys et des Tomcats, dans la banlieue d’Ealing. Entassé parmi les dizaines de groupes officiant sur Londres, les Tomcats partent surfer en Espagne, via Madrid où ils enregistrent quelques titres sur des EP qui marcheront bien (qui referont surface en 1997 sur une compilation posthume signé par le label Essex), avant de revenir sur Ealing en 68 se prendre en pleine gueule le Flower Power. Et sortir l’album éponyme dans la foulée, coïncidence de talents et de substances illicites.<br />Et quel disque! Une douzaine de perles pop, parfois totalement trippante, voire étrange dans la construction des phases mélodiques, parfois tout bonnement parfaite, reprenant l’héritage des Beatles à leurs sauces, savant assemblages de vignettes orientales et de distorsion voulue ou non, donnant à l’opus ce coté bancal si attachant. La production est époustouflante d’ingéniosité, le mysticisme qui s’en dégage vous embarquant dans un univers coloré et mouvant, long voyage initiatique dans les méandres d’une machine molle à la Burroughs, comme le présuppose la sublime pochette, galerie d’images monstrueuses et pourtant tellement attirante. </span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-size: small;"><br />Contrairement à d’autres LP semblable, point besoin pour le groupe de construire de longues envolées pleine de fuzz, ou de futile improvisations, la plupart des morceaux ne dépassant les 3mn que sur le superbe Dandelion Seeds, ou le dernier titre, raggae en forme de descente tout en douceur d‘un délirant voyage cosmique. La diversité des climats et des références, tantôt orientales (ce sitar!!!), tantôt africaines (percu génialement utilisé sur I See, morceau que le Floyd a oublié d’enregistrer!), allié à une facilité de compositions, hypnotisent l’auditeur qui se confond avec plaisir, si il en prend la peine, dans cette démesure et cette décadence qu’implique une œuvre comme July.<br />Ce voyage initiatique au trip, assurément, aurait engendré d’autres enregistrements, que l’on retrouve ici et là en bonus sur quelques rééditions, mais qui ne valent pas pour autant la qualité des pièces maîtresses de July. Essex a sorti en 1995 une galette exorcisant quelques morceaux enregistrés en Espagne en 67, pour les fans. Perso, je resterai volontiers avec cet album éponyme, sans chercher à en savoir plus, tant la multitude d’écoute qu’il implique pour en disséquer toute sa richesse semble infini. Deux singles sont tirés de cet album, le premier connaîtra un pressage espagnol, le second différents pressages dont un français (sans photo malheureusement, qu’il ne vous reste plus qu’à trouver!) et un belge (celui ci superbe!). <br />Le groupe ne parviendra pas comme tant d’autre à survivre au flower power, et le groupe se disloquera au fur et à mesure. On retrouvera ainsi que le clavier et le guitariste au sein de Jade Warrior, là où Tom Newman le chanteur esquissera une carrière solo.</span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-size: small;">En 1966, Bob Sargeant remplace Peter Wallis aux claviers, et finira même
au chant quand Ronnie Barker et John Anderson quitteront le navire
avant l'enregistrement de l'album en 1970. Durant les quatre années qui
précèdent cette sortie, le groupe tourne constamment en Grande Bretagne,
assurant des premières parties flatteuses comme celles des <b>Who</b>, de <b>Jimi Hendrix</b>, du <b>John Mayall Band</b> ou encore de <b>Rod Stewart</b> et de <b>Jethro Tull</b>. Ils finiront même par accompagner <b>Howlin Wolf</b> et <b>Freddie King</b>
dans des tournées mondiales. Après le départ de Sargeant fin 1970, le
groupe tourne en trio une année avant de se séparer. Plusieurs
reformations ont été conclues entre différents membres du groupe depuis
1977, et ils continuent les tournées encore aujourd'hui.<br /><br />Finalement
orientés vers un rock mêlant R'n'B et un style de blue-eyed soul plutôt
heavy, leur unique album n'a plus vraiment la touche Mod ou Beat des
débuts ; La preuve en est la reprise très standard de C<i>hange in Louise</i> (<b>Cocker/Stainton</b>), ou encore du titre très blues traditionnel <i>Am i blue</i> (mais avec quand même un synthé discret, bien présent sur tout les titres). <i>Minotaur</i>, Le titre qui ouvre l'album rappelle un <b>Ten Years After</b> en plus R'n'B, avec ses claviers et son mélange subtil de rock et de blues très rythmé, tout comme le très bon <i>Repreive</i> sur la face 2. La basse est très funky, à écouter en priorité le second morceau <i>Fly me high</i>, qui évoque déjà les prémices du disco. Dans un style plus proche des <b>Who</b>, <i>Help me</i> clôture en beauté la face 1. Cet album sera édité en France chez Barclay, crédité également d'un 45tours unique. </span></b></div>
